Over May 12th and 13th, 40 industry professionals, sommeliers and wine writers from across Canada and the U.S. met in Windsor, Ontario to taste their way through 932 wines submitted by 132 wineries from Ontario, British Columbia, Quebec, Atlantic Canada and even Manitoba. With 288 awards being issued, wineries in the Essex County and Pelee Island region made an excellent showing. The region had a strong representation from several brand new wineries enjoying significant success, including Viewpointe Estate Winery who won a gold for their 2005 Pinot Grigio ($14.95) and a bronze for their 2005 Auxerrois ($14.95). www.canadianwinetrail.com

We had the pleasure of having Konrad at the Vintage Tasting event in August. His enthusiasm for the region and the wines that are being produced is a great indicator of a successful future. His pocket guide showcases the wineries of Ontario and is a useful resource for those exploring our growing region.

 
 

The Government of Ontario has recently passed “Bring Your Own Wine” legislation. BYOW regulations allow customers to bring in unopened bottles of commercially made wine to licensed establishments such as family and fine dining restaurants, cafes, and hotel restaurants. Establishments offering the BYOW service may place their own restrictions on customers participating in the program such as corkage fees, minimum required food orders, or limit the number of bottles that a customer can bring in, so please be sure to call ahead.
